What Are You Planning On?

March 17, 2014

college sign
How can you not love this sign? While I’m not even sure if this sign is real or an internet hoax, the reality is that most people plan their lives with this same level of preparation. If only we planned our professional lives in the same manner as we planned vacations we would be golden!
Large companies have been making 1, 3 and 5 year plans for as long as we can remember and yet most of us refuse to follow suit. I coach the idea of taking that one step further. I coach a 30 day plan and then move to a 3 month, 6 month and 1 year plan. Most people have the ability for intense focus for 30 days and that focus tends to fall off after 30 days. This means that we can accomplish more in 30 days than we ever thought possible and less in a year than would seem reasonable. This loss of focus at the year goals are the reason for continuing review of your goals. When people review their goals quarterly they tend to find themselves scrambling to meet quota on day 80 with scant time to actually accomplish what they set out to do. Those that review their goal progress weekly have the luxury of course correction and the likelihood of success increases dramatically.
What camp do you fall into? Are you a weekly or a quarterly reviewer? If you are consistently falling short we should talk. My name is Steven Clauson and I am the Founder of Top Line Results Coaching. I can be reached at 916-230-0176 or at http://www.toplineresultscoaching.com
